Sony WF-1000XM6 Review: The Noise-Cancelling Earbuds That Set the 2026 Benchmark

Sony's flagship earbuds return with a sharper noise-cancelling processor, four microphones per side, and a smaller, more comfortable shape. At $329.99 they are not cheap — but they are once again the pair every other premium earbud is measured against. Here's the full review.

Sony's 1000X earbuds have spent years as the default answer to a simple question: what are the best all-round noise-cancelling earbuds you can buy? The WF-1000XM6 arrived in February 2026 to defend that title, and after weeks of commutes, flights, and calls, the short version is that Sony has not just maintained its lead — it has widened it in the areas that matter most.

Noise cancelling that genuinely raises the bar

The headline upgrade is a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor working alongside Sony's Integrated Processor V2, fed by four microphones on each earbud rather than three. Sony claims a 25 percent reduction in noise versus the already-excellent WF-1000XM5, and in practice the improvement is easy to hear. The low rumble of a plane cabin or train carriage drops away almost completely, and the adaptive optimizer adjusts in real time to your surroundings and how the buds are seated in your ears.

Crucially, Sony has also tightened the seal against sound that leaks in through gaps between the ear tips and your ear canal. The result is the quietest pair of earbuds I have tested, and it is no longer a close contest in noisy environments.

A smaller, more comfortable design

Past 1000X earbuds were effective but a little bulky. The XM6 adopts a redesigned, slightly smaller shape that sits more flush and stays put during head movement and light exercise. Combined with Sony's noise-isolation tips, the fit is more secure and more comfortable over long listening sessions, which also happens to improve passive isolation before the ANC even kicks in.

Sound quality and features

Sound is classic Sony: a rich, slightly warm signature that flatters most music while staying detailed, with support for high-resolution wireless codecs and Sony's upscaling for compressed tracks. There is a full app with a customizable EQ, so you can dial the tuning to taste. The XM6 also embraces the latest wireless audio standards for more efficient, more reliable streaming, and connectivity is noticeably steadier thanks to a larger antenna.

Call quality, historically the weak spot for premium earbuds, gets a real overhaul. A bone-conduction sensor plus AI-driven beamforming and noise reduction isolate your voice from background noise, and callers consistently said I sounded clear even on a busy street. Hands-free Gemini support is built in for quick voice tasks without reaching for your phone.

Battery and the price question

Battery life lands around eight hours of listening on a charge with noise cancelling on, and roughly 24 hours total with the case — competitive, if not class-leading, and easily enough for a full day plus a top-up. Fast charging gets you a quick boost when you are running out the door.

The sticking point is the price. At $329.99 the XM6 sits at the very top of the mainstream earbud market, and rivals from Bose, Apple, and Samsung deliver excellent results for less. What you pay the premium for is the combination: best-in-class noise cancelling, strong sound, much-improved calls, and a mature app, all in one pair.

Who should buy the WF-1000XM6?

Buy them if noise cancelling is your top priority — frequent flyers, commuters, and anyone working in a noisy space will get the most out of them. They are also the safest pick if you want one pair that does everything well rather than specializing.

If you are price-sensitive, or you are already deep in Apple's or Samsung's ecosystem and value tight integration over outright ANC, a cheaper rival will serve you well. But if you simply want the best, the WF-1000XM6 is it.

Verdict

The Sony WF-1000XM6 is an iterative update that gets the important things right: quieter noise cancelling, a better fit, and finally, genuinely good call quality. The price is steep and the battery is merely good rather than great, but as an all-round package these are once again the earbuds to beat in 2026.
