Two of the most popular pocket cameras pull in opposite directions. The GoPro Hero 13 Black is a rugged action camera built to be thrown into chaos, while the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a gimbal-stabilized vlogging tool built for smooth, cinematic footage. Choosing between them comes down to how and where you actually shoot.

Build and durability

The Hero 13 Black is waterproof out of the box and shrugs off mud, sand and saltwater, which makes it the obvious pick for surfing, mountain biking and anything you would never risk a phone on. The Osmo Pocket 3 is more delicate and is not designed for submersion, so it lives happier on a tripod, a vlog setup or a city walk.

Stabilization and image quality

Both stabilize beautifully, but they do it differently. GoPro's HyperSmooth is electronic and superb for fast, jolting action. The Osmo Pocket 3 uses a mechanical gimbal and a larger 1-inch sensor, which delivers noticeably better low-light footage, smoother pans and a more flattering, cinematic look. For talking-to-camera vlogging, the Osmo's rotating screen and face tracking are hard to beat.

Audio, battery and workflow

The Osmo Pocket 3 has the edge for solo creators, with strong built-in mics and easy pairing with DJI's wireless microphones. The Hero 13 Black is fine for ambient action audio but is not built for narration. Battery life favors quick action bursts on the GoPro and longer continuous recording on the Osmo.

The verdict

Buy the GoPro Hero 13 Black if you need a tough, waterproof camera for sport and adventure. Buy the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 if you mostly vlog, travel or want the smoothest, best-looking handheld video. They are less rivals than tools for different jobs, and the right answer is simply the one that matches the way you film.
