Apple Watch Ultra 2 Review: The Toughest Smartwatch Apple Has Ever Made

Two years after Apple stunned the wearables world with the original Ultra, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 arrives with meaningful refinements that make an already excellent device even better. After testing it through trail runs, open-water swims, and mountaineering expeditions, I can confirm this is the definitive smartwatch for serious athletes.

Design and Durability

The Ultra 2 retains the bold 49mm titanium case that made its predecessor instantly recognizable. It's MIL-STD-810H certified, rated to 100 meters water resistance, and built to survive whatever you throw at it. The flat sapphire crystal display resists scratches that would destroy lesser watches.

The new black titanium finish is a fresh option that looks stunning and conceals minor scuffs better than the natural titanium. A customizable Action Button on the left side is genuinely useful — you can assign it to start workouts, activate waypoints, or trigger the flashlight.

Display

The 2000-nit Always-On Retina display is simply the best on any smartwatch. It's readable in direct sunlight, which matters when you're hiking at altitude. Night mode preserves dark adaptation with a low-brightness red display.

GPS Performance

The dual-frequency L1 and L5 GPS is a game-changer for outdoor athletes. In environments where normal GPS struggles — urban canyons, dense forests, mountain terrain — the Ultra 2 maintains exceptional accuracy. Our trail running tests showed consistent tracking within 2-3 meters.

Health and Fitness Tracking

The Ultra 2 carries Apple's latest S9 chip with upgraded sensors:

  • Heart rate: Continuous monitoring with irregular rhythm notifications
  • Blood oxygen: On-demand and background measurements
  • ECG: Single-lead electrocardiogram
  • Temperature: Skin temperature sensing for cycle tracking
  • Crash detection: Automatically calls emergency services

The Workout app supports over 100 workout types. Triathlon mode transitions seamlessly between swim, bike, and run. Custom workouts with structured intervals are easy to create.

Battery Life

Apple claims 60 hours in standard mode and 72 hours in Low Power Mode. In real-world testing with GPS-heavy activities, I consistently achieved 48-55 hours — still far beyond any competing flagship smartwatch.

Fast charging via the updated magnetic charger takes it from 0-80% in about 60 minutes.

watchOS 11

The Ultra 2 ships with watchOS 11, which adds training load tracking, vitals monitoring, and a new Smart Stack that intelligently surfaces relevant widgets. The software ecosystem remains unmatched on any wearable platform.

Verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is for users who truly need a rugged, capable adventure watch. If you regularly push your limits outdoors, this is the watch to buy. For everyday athletes, the Apple Watch Series 9 offers 80% of the capability at half the price.
